Review of “Risky is the New Safe”

The world needs big thinkers…

Hi friends, yes this will be a short post today, but over the weekend I read Randy Gage’s new book  Risky is the New Safe
and I have to admit….

What a Read!

Whether you have read his work before or not Randy Gage takes you on a thought provoking ride of the future. If you are serious of making money, have “security”, prosper or just survive the future I recommend this read.

Yes the world needs big thinkers and big ideas. This is also true for us whom want to become fulltime authors or dominate book sales. We need to think out of the box, look at market shifts and try and determine how this landscape will look like in the future.

My question is…

How many of us are doing these things?

In short this might not be the type of review you are used to but Risky is the New Safe is honestly one of the best books I have read in a while. Go grab yourself a copy today!

How to train like a Ninja and become a full time writer

For a flicker in my youth I wanted to be a ninja – a red Ninja, because white was good, black was evil and red was in between. See my best mate and I created weapons, saved money for ninja-stars and rented every cheap video production ever made – all in the attempt to develop our cat-like-assassin skills.  We imagined quests and fought the air of evil opponents. It was our world. Our make-believe and in that world everything was possible.

We trained for weeks. Weapons, balance and kicks. We were students of our shared obsession – and boy was it fun.

Then it happened….

No we were not beaten to a pulp by school bullies (my ninja partner was the biggest boy in town) – we simply outgrew our obsession. Although we never saved the world from an evil boss or received that kiss from the pretty girl, three things stuck with me from my time being a “Ninja”.

  • My world of make believe
  • To be the student
  • To have freedom and fun

No I can literally write or speak about my world of make believe for hours at end. And let us be honest that should be one thing all fiction writers must have in common.  If you can’t imagine it, then sorry, you can’t become a fulltime writer, or any sort of fiction writer for that matter.

But Imagination alone doesn’t buy the bread…

It is not news that the publishing industry has changed and yes any person with the ability to put a sentence into something structured now can publish their work. However becoming a full time writer and making money online from writing is a different prospect. I tried my hand in selling short stories on kindle and also some marketing how to reportsand although I am getting constant sales it is no where near enough to leave my day job.

Then one night gazing into a white screen, remembering my Ninja days, it hit my like a nunchuck square in the face.

I needed a new…

Writing Philosophy

See for me to become a fulltime writer and leave the rat race for ever, I needed a new strategy. I needed to connect to my ninja youth. And this was the birth of my writing philosophy…

“I will be a student of the craft…”

It sounds simplistic, but honestly most philosophical statements are. By becoming a student I can create value. Value gets noticed, talked about and value prospers- and the only way for me to create such value is to be diligent in understanding, bettering and mastering the craft of writing.

”but I need freedom to be the student”

No Philosophy is without challenges. For me to become a full time writer and make money from the craft, I need to be free, both in time and money. I can churn out bad fiction day in and out and run this as a hobby, but that is not my writing dream. I would love to hold a printed copy of my book in a bookstore one-day.  But to free time and money, I need to free myself from the rat race.

“To gain the freedom I need to take massive action”

I once listened to a tape by Tony Robbins where he explained that nothing in life change without action. And to gain the most momentum you don’t need mediocre action but massive action. You need to run instead of step and leap instead of jump. I need to make leveraged income, open sources of automated cash flow. Best of all I am doing it! I took the plunge.  Best of all with Kindle I can earn while I learn!

So the correct order is

  • Take Action
  • Become free in time and money
  • Become the student

Do short stories sell on kindle?

Maybe an even better question would be…do short stories

sell at all?

To be honest with you all, I don’t have the answer yet. To be even more honest my short Meeting Kate has sold so far 50 copies, not New York bestseller list stuff…but I do believe we are moving and penetrating markets with short stories through the kindle platform. Yes people live busy lives, and busy people tend to have little time to read. It is there that we need to connect with our target markets. Those busy people whom a short read of an hour are enough to spend on lunch or sit through a boring commute.

Money vs time

There is another side to writing shorts stories and fiction. Writers can churn out shorter work more often opening up various revenue streams…however, there is still that burning desire to actually write that best selling novel.

Anyhow I am busy with my follow up short story…I will keep you posted.

For now, please hop over and get yourself a copy of my short story  Meeting Kate and help out a struggling author…
